What It Means to Be a Business that Helps the Community

Arizona
Since we are headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona (AZ), and TOPDOG founders Krista Duncan Black (CEO) and Jeff Black reside there, we are very involved in the local and legal communities in Maricopa County and throughout AZ. Paralegal Nathan Chase, of Arizona, joined the TOPDOG team as a full-time employee after working with us as an intern while studying at Rio Salado College.

Georgia
The most recent addition to the TOPDOG team is Nikki Conley of Marietta, Georgia, a community near Atlanta. We kicked off our local volunteer involvement there when Nikki participated in National Volunteer Week in 2022 in her community and we look forward to future opportunities to support organizations and develop new relationships in Georgia.

Indiana
TOPDOG has a substantial presence in Indiana as well, particularly in the Indianapolis metro area, where our Legal Content Director, Heather Banner Kane, lives. Heather and Krista attended law school together at Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and Heather provides a local point of contact for our strong client base in Indiana communities throughout the state.

West Virginia
We also support organizations and events throughout West Virginia (WV). Our founders have WV roots, the company was founded there and enjoys a wonderful client base in WV, and several employees—Creative and Administrative Director Paula Roberts, Content Production Specialist Lynn Kessler, and Administrative Assistant Samantha Roberts—live in the greater Charleston, WV area.
Why Companies Should Give Back to the Community
A business that helps the community can improve the lives and conditions of people and institutions in its realm of influence while also enjoying internal rewards. You likely know the phrase, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” While there is truth in this statement, a damaged boat often cannot float. A community, whether geographic or industry-based, has a responsibility to help mend the conditions that prevent the rising tide from lifting us all.
Ways TOPDOG Legal Marketing Gives Back the Community
- Employee Volunteer and Donation Opportunities
- Proud Legal Sponsor
- Making the Most of Our Skills and Resources
TOPDOG Legal Marketing sees value in offering employees opportunities to engage in volunteer efforts and other contributions to the community or causes of their choice. On selected national days of service and in recognition of National Volunteer Week, the company donates employee time for participation in volunteer activities.
TOPDOG employees have used donated work time to help local and national organizations and causes, including the following activities:
- Creating and sending cards to military families;
- Sending notes to nursing home residents with limited visitation during the pandemic;
- Donating supplies to local organizations;
- Contributing to map data for the US Geological Survey’s National Map project;
- Reviewing grant applications and making funding recommendations to the United Way of Central West Virginia;
- Creating affirming notes to be included in Blessings in a Backpack for children;
- Stocking supply closets for Abby’s Angels Foundation; and
- Helping reconnect families and their pets through Lost Dogs Arizona.
Leading by example, TOPDOG founders Jeff and Krista Duncan Black are regular volunteers at St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix, AZ, one of the largest food banks in the U.S.
Determined to create some good amid the pandemic, TOPDOG provided employees with paid time off for COVID vaccination. This time could be used to schedule, travel to and from, and receive vaccination for the employee or loved ones. After an established, reasonable period, unused leave was donated to an organization recommended by employees. In recognition of their efforts and hardships throughout the pandemic, in December 2021, the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Foundation was chosen to receive $500 in funds that remained from the allocated employee COVID vaccination leave time.
As members of the legal community, it is important to TOPDOG’s leadership to give back in meaningful ways to the business community we serve. Event participation and being a legal conference sponsor are rewarding ways to engage with others in the legal industry. TOPDOG’s exhibitor and sponsor engagements include the following events and organizations:
- State Bar of Arizona Annual Convention;
- Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC) Annual Meeting;
- Arizona Paralegal Association Annual Conference;
- Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia (DTCWV) Annual Meeting;
- DTCWV Women for Women Conference;
- Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) Annual Meeting;
- Legal Assistants Paralegals of Southern West Virginia (LAPSWV) Annual Meeting;
- Maricopa County Bar Association Paralegal Division Conference;
- West Virginia Association for Justice (WVAJ) Annual Conference; and
- WVAJ Mid-Winter Convention.
As we are able, TOPDOG offers various services at reduced or no cost to legal organizations, like local bar associations and law schools. Contributions in this area have included continuing legal education (CLE) sessions, event speakers, and digital marketing services, like website design and content creation. Representative organizations we have worked with on these projects include the following:
- Forensic Expert Witness Association, Arizona Chapter (now part of the Southwest Region);
- Hamilton County Bar Association (Indiana);
- West Virginia University College of Law; and
- West Virginia Women Attorneys (WVWA).
At TOPDOG, we are committed to providing customized, premium legal marketing services to our clients, and we are invested in their success. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many law firms faced uncertainty and budget constraints. TOPDOG provided courtesy services to support our clients’ marketing efforts while the legal industry was feeling the worst of the adverse effects of the pandemic.
